Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing, sometimes referred to as a deep cleaning, is done by cleaning between your gums and roots down to your roots. Depending upon the severity and your senstivity, you may receive local anesthetic to numb your gums and the roots of your teeth.
Scaling and root planing is very effective is treating gum disease and stopping the progression towards Gingivitis.
We recommend brushing and flossing regularly afterward to diminish the chance of your gum disease continuing to progress.
Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection of the teeth and gums. It can result in bleeding, receding gums, and sensitivity. Plus, it's the #1 cause of adult tooth loss in the US.
Arestin® is an antibiotic that is added to scaling and root planing. It is nearly three times more likely to result in successful treatment than scaling and root planing alone.
Dr. Rosala will place Arestin® in the infected gum pockets below your gumline, which is painless. Arestin® will dissolve, so no removal is needed, and it is more effective than a pill because it is placed right where you need it to be: at the spot of the gum disease.
